65 PARTICIPATE IN HISTORIC 300TH 5K

      Sixty five runners participated in the 300th 5K on a picture perfect Southern California day on July 12, 2010.    Dave Parsel ran a 17:44 to hold off 15 year old Brandon Ferguson to win by 8 seconds.   Rounding out the top five were John Araujo 3- 19.53, Randy Parker 4- 20.23 and Nam Ngo 5- 20.51.

      The 65 runners were the 3rd most runners to participate in a 5K.  The top four races follow.

    Five runners established personal bests led by Quentin Eng who lowered his PB by 1:33.  Other runners establishing PB’s were:  Chris King (14 seconds better), Rick Noer (8 seconds better), Jessica Alexander (7 seconds better), and Frank Nogales (4 seconds better.

     All finishers received a t-shirt with the words ‘300th Seal Beach Nelson 5K – July 12, 2010.  Thanks to Jill Graham and the Seal Beach fitness center staff for the free t-shirts and refreshments.  Thanks to Ed Cohn for furnishing a 300th 5K cake and Rick Salas for furnishing a 300th 5K banner.  And thanks to all 65 runners that participated in the historic 5K.

RACE HISTORY

    TRACY BROWN AND JIM HELLER SET UP THE FIRST RACE ON APRIL 29, 1981 COMMERATING OUR FIRST REC CENTER AT SEAL BEACH, A PORTABLE BLDG ABOUT HALF THE SIZE OF THE CURRENT BLDG LOCATED ABOUT 100 YARDS WEST OF THE CURRENT LOCATION.  THE ¼ MILE DIRT TRACK WHERE THE FIRST RACE WAS RUN WAS JUST SOUTH OF THE ORIGINAL FITNESS CENTER.

     THE 2ND RACE WASN’T HELD UNTIL MAY 1983.  THE THIRD RACE WAS HELD IN MARCH 1984 AND THAT IS WHEN THE RACE BECAME A MONTHLY EVENT.

    THE FITNESS COORDINATOR WAS LINDA TAYLOR WHEN THE FIRST RACE WAS HELD IN 1981.  KELLIE SMITH WHO LATER BECAME KELLIE ABANO STARTED IN ABOUT 1986.  HER MANAGER WAS DAVE SHAW WHO RESIDED IN DOWNEY.  HE WAS KELLIE’S MANAGER UNTIL 1994 WHEN KELLIE WAS NAMED MANAGER. DAVE SHAW IS NOW MANAGER OF OUR SISTER SITE IN HUNTINGTON BEACH.

     DEBBIE HUITT WAS HIRED ABOUT 1992 TO ASSIST KELLIE AND WORKED AT THE SB FITNESS CENTER UNTIL 1998.  . WE WERE HONORED TO HAVE DEBBIE RUN WITH US TODAY.   MIKE LEOMITI WAS NAMED MANAGER OF THE SB SITE ABOUT 2000 AND IS THE CURRENT MANAGER OF SEAL BEACH AND LONG BEACH SITES.  .  FOLLOWING KELLIE WAS PATRICK THOMPSON AND FOLLOWING HIM WAS JILL GRAHAM WHO STARTED IN ABOUT 1998.  CHAMNAN SO HAS BEEN ASSISTING JILL FOR 4 YEARS.  THUS KELLIE ABANO AND JILL GRAHAM HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE 5K FOR 24 OF THE 29 YEARS.  THANK YOU KELLIE AND JILL FOR 24 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE.

     TY STERN STARTED WITH ROCKWELL AID IN 1986 IN DOWNEY AND HIS FIRST ASSIGNMENT WAS TO START A 5K AT THE DOWNEY FITNESS CENTER.  TY HAS NOW COORDINATED 22 ANNUAL 5K’S IN DOWNEY AND NOW HUNTINGTON BEACH FACILITY ON BOLSA CHICA.  HE HAD 100+ RUNNERS IN SOME OF HIS ANNUAL RACES.

 

      I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM KELLIE 2 DAYS AGO.  SHE, 2 KIDS 9 & 11 AND HUSBAND ARE DOING FINE IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA WHERE THEY RELOCATED ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO.   

 

RACE HISTORY STATS

Jim Heller, Ed Loh, Rick Salas and Nelson Slagle were the only runners to run in the 1st 5K and the 300th 5K.  They also all ran in the 100th, 200th and 250th 5K.

Ed Loh and Nelson Slagle were the only two runners to run in the first three races held.  Nelson’s streak end at 3, but Ed’s streak didn’t end until running the first 8 races.

      DAVE PARCEL HAS WON (110) RACES AND JOHN ARAUJO HAS WON 42 RACES.  DAVE & JOHN HAVE WON HALF OF THE RACES BUT 75% OF THE LAST 200 RACES.

     WE HAVE HAD 925 DIFFERENT RUNNERS PARTICIPATE IN THE FIRST 299 RACES.  15 RUNNERS HAVE RUN IN MORE THAN 100 RACES, 37 HAVE RAN 50 OR MORE RACES AND 205 HAVE RAN AT LEAST 10 RACES.

 

 

      Ann Tack, Ed Cohn and Bob Palomba are the only runners who ran in the first 5K in Downey in 1986 and today’s 300th 5K.
